On the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China, we stand in solidarity with the people of Hong Kong and their aspirations for genuine democracy, self-governance and the rule of law.
Democracy and human rights are the foundations of a free and peaceful society, and a common desire of all humankind.
Two decades on, the territory remains denied the universal suffrage that it was promised under the Basic Law.
We express our grave concerns over Beijing’s increasing interference in Hong Kong politics and the rapid erosion of freedom in recent years, including the persecution of pro-democracy activists and the undue influence over elections.
The authoritarian Chinese government’s failure to honour its commitment to the ‘one-country, two-systems’ agreement has today awakened a whole new generation of Hong Kongers striving for a truly democratic society.
The people of Hong Kong, particularly the youth, have shown that the human spirit and the desire for fundamental rights and freedoms cannot be crushed, no matter how ruthless the oppressor may be.
We express our deep respect for all those fighting for their fundamental freedoms, in particular those who continue to suffer from the oppression of the Chinese Communist Party. We admire your indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to nonviolence and share your aspirations to have full control over your affairs and to determine your own future. We will stand with you for as long as it takes for your aspirations to be fulfilled.
As Xi Jinping makes his first trip to Hong Kong since becoming anointed as China’s “core leader”, he must seize the opportunity to show his leadership by listening to the people of Hong Kong and addressing their legitimate grievances. We call on the Chinese authorities to refrain from use of force against these peaceful protesters, and in particular appeal directly to security forces to refuse unconscionable orders from their superiors if they come. We also call for International community to stand with the people of Hong Kong in their struggle for rights and democracy in this critical time.
