International Tibet Network mourns the passing of Gyalo Thondup, a titan in the Tibetan movement and the elder brother of His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama.
Gyalo Thondup la’s remarkable life was marked by his unwavering dedication to the Tibetan cause, as he worked tirelessly to promote the interests of the Tibetan people globally.
Born in 1927 in Amdo, Tibet, Gyalo Thondup was a central figure in Tibet’s modern history. He was instrumental in liaising with global powers and leading efforts to support Tibetan resistance to China’s occupation of Tibet. Throughout his life, he played a crucial role in taking the Tibetan issue to the United Nations, resulting in three significant resolutions between 1959 and 1965.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama said, “He was a good man who did his best for the Tibetan cause. I pray that he will take a good rebirth as a Tibetan again and that he will be able to serve the Tibetan administration that is a combination of spirituality and politics once more.”
Gyalo Thondup la was a passionate advocate for Tibetan rights and a skilled diplomat. As a former Kalon Tripa (Tibetan Prime Minister), he worked closely in discussions between global governments and the Tibetan Government in Exile on Tibet’s international strategy. His memoir, ‘The Noodle Maker of Kalimpong’, offers a glimpse into his extraordinary life and commitment to the Tibetan people.
In an interview with Radio Free Asia in November 2024, Gyalo Thondup la said, “My hope is that Tibetans work together in unity and harmony and make Tibet’s culture, Tibet’s situation known to the whole world, and without losing heart continue to find ways to overcome difficulties, so everyone please work hard.”
Gyalo Thondup la’s courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the Tibetan people will continue to inspire the Tibetan freedom movement.
